These types of ester linkage are found in a wide variety of plant cell walls [ 11. The feruloyl esterase activities reported to date are predominantly microbial (Table l ) , and these types of enzymes are secreted by several species to facilitate breakdown of the plant cell wall as a food source. Although there are many types of esterase, the unique feature of the feruloyl esterases is their specificity for hydrolysis of hydroxycinna-

Structural basis for the substrate specificity of the feruloyl esterase domain of the cellulosomal xylanase Z from Clostridium thermocellum.
Feruloyl esterases function in the cleavage of ferulic acid's bonds to arabinoxylan and pectin where the ferulic acid moieties cross-link the layers of polysaccharide chains within hemicellulose. This work presents the crystal structure of FAE_XynZ, the domain of Clostridium thermocellum's cellulosomal xylanase Z that displays feruloyl esterase activity. The structure was obtained via multiple ...
متن کاملA non-modular type B feruloyl esterase from Neurospora crassa exhibits concentration-dependent substrate inhibition.
Feruloyl esterases, a subclass of the carboxylic acid esterases (EC 3.1.1.1), are able to hydrolyse the ester bond between the hydroxycinnamic acids and sugars present in the plant cell wall. The enzymes have been classified as type A or type B, based on their substrate specificity for aromatic moieties. We show that Neurospora crassa has the ability to produce multiple ferulic acid esterase ac...
متن کاملFeruloyl esterase
Feruloyl esterase forms a part of the enzyme complex that acts collectively and synergistically to completely hydrolyze xylan to its monomers. The enzyme has found potential uses in a wide variety of applications of interest to the agrifood and pharmaceutical industries. This review describes the enzymology of feruloyl esterases involved in xylan degradation. The occurrence of feruloyl esterase...
متن کاملRegulation of the feruloyl esterase (faeA) gene from Aspergillus niger.
Feruloyl esterases can remove aromatic residues (e.g., ferulic acid) from plant cell wall polysaccharides (xylan, pectin) and are essential for complete degradation of these polysaccharides. Expression of the feruloyl esterase-encoding gene (faeA) from Aspergillus niger depends on D-xylose (expression is mediated by XlnR, the xylanolytic transcriptional activator) and on a second system that re...
متن کاملDiversity of fungal feruloyl esterases: updated phylogenetic classification, properties, and industrial applications
Feruloyl esterases (FAEs) represent a diverse group of carboxyl esterases that specifically catalyze the hydrolysis of ester bonds between ferulic (hydroxycinnamic) acid and plant cell wall polysaccharides. Therefore, FAEs act as accessory enzymes to assist xylanolytic and pectinolytic enzymes in gaining access to their site of action during biomass conversion. Their ability to release ferulic ...
